Hey mommies!  My mama is taking a nap, so I decided to take over her website. Usually, it’s the other way around. I sleep while she writes. Or, I climb over her lap and laptop and try to press the off  button. She doesn’t even get mad! As a matter of fact, she thinks it’s funny. She works really hard, but usually she shuts down the computer and plays with me if I ask. The other day, she gave me a new doll, courtesy of the folks over at World of EPI.  You may have met Dr. Lisa earlier. Well, the doll looked like me. She had smooth cocoa colored skin and a big afro puff. My mom told me she got a pretty brown doll because I’m her pretty brown girl. She buys me a lot of different dolls, but I think Darling Dana will be one of my favorite friends. My mom said we could do anything we wanted for the rest of the day.

So, we went out to eat with my mom, aunt, grammy and few other family members. Everyone at the table was surprised that I ate onions. Dana does too. We split a salad for our appetizer. After lunch, we played pretend. I put on some sunglasses and sang a silly song. Dana danced.

Then we headed to the park. It was Dana’s first time on the swings, but she kept asking my mommy to push us higher. She’s really brave! And we went down a fast slide and crawled through a long tunnel. Dana didn’t want to leave!  We convinced my mom to let us stay for ten more minutes. Dana wants to be a scientist when she grows up, so we spent the time looking for bugs and collecting leaves. I don’t know if I want to work with creepy crawlers when I’m older, but I still had a lot of fun.

When we got home, we were so tired! I got my owl pillows from my bedroom, and let Dana lay on the bigger one–she is our guest! We fought our sleep and stayed up an talked about our day. Oh, by the way, Dana does come with shoes–but I took them off. My mommy paints my toes, so I wanted her to paint Dana’s. She said maybe tomorrow when we wake up.  Until then, have a good night and don;t forget to say your prayers. Pray that you’ll win the Positively Perfect Contest!

Not long ago, Heather Hopson hosted a television show in the Cayman Islands. Today, she's back home writing a different kind of story as a new mom. In her 15 years working as a professional journalist, this by far is her best assignment! Growing up, she dreamed of becoming Oprah Winfrey. She was the features editor for her school’s newspaper and a teen talk show host for her city’s most popular radio station. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Michigan State University. After graduation, she worked as a television producer and reporter at CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates throughout the U.S. Instead of heading to Chicago to join Ms. Winfrey on her set, she bought a plane ticket to the Cayman Islands instead. She arrived five days before a category five hurricane! She lived in paradise for seven years, hosted an award-winning television show and traveled the globe with a government delegation. She also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters and spearheaded a Send a Kid to Camp campaign. Then, she relocated to Washington, D.C. to obtain a teaching certification and instruct 8th grade reading at a high needs middle school. She later returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA to raise her daughter Caitlynn, now 4-years-old. During her 10-month-stint as a stay-at-home mom, Caitlynn inspired her to create this blog, and Diary of a First Time Mom was born on Mother’s Day 2012. Two years later, she expanded the family to include 20+ writers. Currently, Heather serves as the communications director at Allies for Children. In addition, she is the owner of Motor Mouth Multimedia, which ranked #49 in Startup Nation’s Home-Based 100 Competition sponsored by Discover Card and Sam’s Club. Recently, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments selected Heather to receive an Emerging Black Artist award to develop Diary of a First Time Mom.
