Dear Diary, Years ago, my dad went through a Tiger Woods stage and practiced his golf swing for hours in the backyard. He even purchased a set of clubs, balls and targets. An avid sports fan and a former athlete, my sister and I just knew the perfect Father’s Day gift to get–lessons with a golf pro. However, my dad never cashed in the certificate. We think he didn’t want to admit that he didn’t really know how to play the game. Instead, he hosted virtual tournaments in the family room with my uncle and his video game system. My sister and I tried again. The next year, we gifted him a tablet to download books. But he never connected the Wi-Fi at his house to use it. They say three times is a charm. So, we’re going to get him a T-mobile free data plan with the T-Mobile Trio AXS. Free Data2

Recently, I went to Walmart Supercenter in Tarentum and picked up the tablet, since I heard it was perfect for multitasking moms, such as myself. I can stay connected anywhere at anytime. I can check email while waiting for Caitlynn to get out of preschool, while under the hair dryer at the salon or even at my parents house. Why do I think my pops will embrace this gift over the others? It comes with Free Data for Life! He doesn’t need Wi-Fi or another bill. Unlike my shopaholic mom, my dad is a bit of a penny pincher.

Free Data3

So, each month, he can get up to 200MB of free data each month for the life of the tablet on T-Mobile’s advanced nationwide 4G network. Perhaps he’ll watch Tiger Woods or order another set of clubs that will never see the golf course. I know that I’ll get tons done! I can…

  • Check email while Caitlynn plays with her cousins and grandparents;
  • Update my Facebook status when Caitlynn gets her hair braided;
  • Fill in my weekly calendar while waiting for Caitlynn to get out of preschool;
  • Tweet about my support for child advocacy issues, such as universal preschool;
  • And do something for me! I can schedule a mani and pedi, make dinner reservations or book a girls getaway.

Check out the video below to see how the tablet helps me get tons done!

For moms who want more than 200MB per month of Free Data for Life on their T-Mobile-connected tablet, T-Mobile and Walmart offer affordable, flexible and overage-free data plans for every type of user–from  those who simply want to check email, the weather or Facebook, to those looking to stream music or video for their kids in the back seat of the mini-van. I think I’ll upgrade for our co-parenting road trips!

Hey DFTM FAm–Where will you use your tablet now that you don’t have to find a coffee shop for free WiFi?

Not long ago, Heather Hopson hosted a television show in the Cayman Islands. Today, she's back home writing a different kind of story as a new mom. In her 15 years working as a professional journalist, this by far is her best assignment! Growing up, she dreamed of becoming Oprah Winfrey. She was the features editor for her school’s newspaper and a teen talk show host for her city’s most popular radio station. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Michigan State University. After graduation, she worked as a television producer and reporter at CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates throughout the U.S. Instead of heading to Chicago to join Ms. Winfrey on her set, she bought a plane ticket to the Cayman Islands instead. She arrived five days before a category five hurricane! She lived in paradise for seven years, hosted an award-winning television show and traveled the globe with a government delegation. She also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters and spearheaded a Send a Kid to Camp campaign. Then, she relocated to Washington, D.C. to obtain a teaching certification and instruct 8th grade reading at a high needs middle school. She later returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA to raise her daughter Caitlynn, now 4-years-old. During her 10-month-stint as a stay-at-home mom, Caitlynn inspired her to create this blog, and Diary of a First Time Mom was born on Mother’s Day 2012. Two years later, she expanded the family to include 20+ writers. Currently, Heather serves as the communications director at Allies for Children. In addition, she is the owner of Motor Mouth Multimedia, which ranked #49 in Startup Nation’s Home-Based 100 Competition sponsored by Discover Card and Sam’s Club. Recently, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments selected Heather to receive an Emerging Black Artist award to develop Diary of a First Time Mom.
