Dear Diary,

Growing up, I spent lots of time in the kitchen—not eating rather getting my hair straightened. I would brace myself, praying not to get burned by the hot comb my mom lifted out of the stove’s flames. Smoke rose from the metal teeth as my mom pulled it through my kinky locks. After she straightened my hair, she would curl it—sometimes in big, loose ringlets; other times in long, tight spirals. She also braided, twisted, teased and spritzed, ensuring her daughter always left home perfectly polished. I unfortunately did not inherit her styling skills. I usually turn to the Afro puff when I do my daughter’s hair. But this summer, I’ve turned to the professionals. We’re spending lots of time outdoors, so Caitlynn’s cornrowed coif is the best beach hair style for toddlers.

But just because it’s an easy, breezy style doesn’t mean I don’t do anything to her hair.  Here’s how I keep cornrows frizz and flyaway free.

Just for Me 1

Tame Fly Aways

I apply Just for Me Smoothing Edges Crème to smooth sides and tame fly aways. The alcohol-free gelee provides both medium-hold and all-day shine.

Control Curls

Like many toddlers, Caitlynn’s hair is still growing. Therefore, her edges aren’t long enough to braid. So, define curls and control frizz, especially on her neckline, I use Just for Me Curl Smoother. This lightweight, milky formula locks in hair’s moisture and keeps curls bouncy. I also apply Just for Me Curl Perfecter. The super rich styling cream leaves hair’s natural texture well-defined and stretches, elongates and defines even the tightest curls.

Replace Beads

If your child is a wild sleeper like my little girl, she’s guaranteed to wake up with a few bare braids. I always buy an extra box of beads and rubber bands to replace those that disappeared while sleeping or playing.

Hey DFTM Fam–How do you keep your child’s hair healthy and manageable throughout the summer? Have you taken the #5FingerChallenge?Just For Me Hair Milk products has a blend of natural ingredients that stand up to mom’s Five Finger Test, leaving natural hair more manageable and moisturized, so you can run your fingers right through it. You can pick up the Just for Me Hair Milk product line at Walmart stores.

Vlog Mom/DFTM Creator

Not long ago, Heather Hopson hosted a television show in the Cayman Islands. Today, she's back home writing a different kind of story as a new mom. In her 15 years working as a professional journalist, this by far is her best assignment! Growing up, she dreamed of becoming Oprah Winfrey. She was the features editor for her school’s newspaper and a teen talk show host for her city’s most popular radio station. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Michigan State University. After graduation, she worked as a television producer and reporter at CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates throughout the U.S. Instead of heading to Chicago to join Ms. Winfrey on her set, she bought a plane ticket to the Cayman Islands instead. She arrived five days before a category five hurricane! She lived in paradise for seven years, hosted an award-winning television show and traveled the globe with a government delegation. She also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters and spearheaded a Send a Kid to Camp campaign. Then, she relocated to Washington, D.C. to obtain a teaching certification and instruct 8th grade reading at a high needs middle school. She later returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA to raise her daughter Caitlynn, now 4-years-old. During her 10-month-stint as a stay-at-home mom, Caitlynn inspired her to create this blog, and Diary of a First Time Mom was born on Mother’s Day 2012. Two years later, she expanded the family to include 20+ writers. Currently, Heather serves as the communications director at Allies for Children. In addition, she is the owner of Motor Mouth Multimedia, which ranked #49 in Startup Nation’s Home-Based 100 Competition sponsored by Discover Card and Sam’s Club. Recently, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments selected Heather to receive an Emerging Black Artist award to develop Diary of a First Time Mom.
