Dear Diary,

As a child, my grandfather nicknamed me M & M. The initials didn’t stand for the sweet chocolate candy that melts in your mouth and not in your hand. The letters stood for Motor Mouth. I ran my mouth from sunrise to sunset. In high school, I hosted a teen talk show on a popular radio station and later went to college to pursue broadcast journalism. Over the years, I kept telling my stories to anyone who would listen, mostly my family. A telephone was an extension of my ear! Since I lived in lots of different places working as a television reporter, I kept in touch with my cell phone. I wish there was Unlimited Talk, Text and Web/Data back then!

Grandfather

Not much has changed. Well, I now have a little girl who has inherited my gift for gab. I’m thankful that she loves to talk too!  There’s never a dull moment in our house, which was the location for the first Thanksgiving I hosted for my family. My parents, sister, aunts, uncle and nephews celebrated the holiday together and we caught up with one another around the dinner table. We shared stories about work, told silly jokes that only we would find funny and talked about why we were so blessed and thankful this year.

We later called the “Other Hopson’s” on my new ZTE Zinger. (We dub them the others, because they migrated to Michigan. Most of our family resides in Pennsylvania). I purchased the telephone through the Walmart Family Mobile Service, which has the lowest priced unlimited plans I’ve seen. An Unlimited Talk Text and Data/Web plan is less than $35/month. Check out this video to see how my family used the phone to celebrate Thanksgiving by talking. You are guaranteed to be entertained by my nephews!

This year, I am thankful for family. I couldn’t imagine not talking to them everyday. My nephews and daughter keep us smiling. I am truly blessed!

Thanksgiving

I’m also thankful for savings. Walmart Best Plans will save big bucks throughout the holiday season. The store is also offering rollbacks on the following phones:

  • *ZTE ZMAX-$179.88 (was $199.88)
  • Alcatel Evolve 2- $49.88 (was $59.88)
  • Samsung Exhibit- $79.88 (was $99.88)
  • Nokia Lumia 635- $99.88 (was $129.88)
  • Launch of the new Samsung Galaxy Avant- $199.88

Hey DFTM Fam–How are you saving money this holiday season? What are you thankful for?

Not long ago, Heather Hopson hosted a television show in the Cayman Islands. Today, she's back home writing a different kind of story as a new mom. In her 15 years working as a professional journalist, this by far is her best assignment! Growing up, she dreamed of becoming Oprah Winfrey. She was the features editor for her school’s newspaper and a teen talk show host for her city’s most popular radio station. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Michigan State University. After graduation, she worked as a television producer and reporter at CBS, NBC and Fox affiliates throughout the U.S. Instead of heading to Chicago to join Ms. Winfrey on her set, she bought a plane ticket to the Cayman Islands instead. She arrived five days before a category five hurricane! She lived in paradise for seven years, hosted an award-winning television show and traveled the globe with a government delegation. She also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters and spearheaded a Send a Kid to Camp campaign. Then, she relocated to Washington, D.C. to obtain a teaching certification and instruct 8th grade reading at a high needs middle school. She later returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA to raise her daughter Caitlynn, now 4-years-old. During her 10-month-stint as a stay-at-home mom, Caitlynn inspired her to create this blog, and Diary of a First Time Mom was born on Mother’s Day 2012. Two years later, she expanded the family to include 20+ writers. Currently, Heather serves as the communications director at Allies for Children. In addition, she is the owner of Motor Mouth Multimedia, which ranked #49 in Startup Nation’s Home-Based 100 Competition sponsored by Discover Card and Sam’s Club. Recently, The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments selected Heather to receive an Emerging Black Artist award to develop Diary of a First Time Mom.
