Dear Diary, After I gave birth, I thought about a lot of things–birth control options weren’t one of them. I asked myself, what will I name my daughter? Who does she look like? Will my milk come in? What else do I need to buy? But birth control methods weren’t on the list. Previously, I used the NuvaRing, which wasn’t very effective. OK, who am I kidding? You gotta read the fine print and follow the directions. If you are one day off, well, that’s one day when you can get pregnant! I wasn’t really thinking about sex, let alone returning to the ring…or a patch…or a pill. But I knew the breastfeeding myth–did you hear that you can’t get pregnant while nursing?–was just that–a myth, and that eventually, if I wanted to have sex again without conceiving Irish twins, I would need to make a decision sometime soon. That’s important. My friend was a reminder. She got pregnant a few months after she delivered a baby. And she took birth control pills! I teased her and said I guess she prayed so much for a baby, the miracle makers up above got confused and put the request through to God more than once! Recently, I caught up with Dr. Drai to find out how that could happen, well, besides divine intervention. I also wanted to get the scoop on the best method to prevent conception, especially while you’re still on maternity leave. Hey DFTM Fam–Did you think about birth control options when you first gave birth? What birth control option would you recommend to another new mom?
